Movie Review: Normal

At least once a day, I like to jump on my treadmill and take a walk. While I walk, I put the TV on and watch something. I’ve been spending a lot of time watching foreign films lately, but this week I was in the mood for something different. I came across a movie called Normal streaming on HBO and decided to give it a try.

I’m a Bob Odenkirk fan, mainly dating back to when he appeared on Breaking Bad and then again in the spin-off Better Call Saul, which I really need to finish. The trailer for Normal intrigued me: guns, shootouts… okay, I’m there. So I put it on and gave it a go.

When you think of Bob Odenkirk, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t “action star.” But this movie has some action, and if you’ve seen Nobody and Nobody 2, you know Odenkirk can pull it off!

The movie takes place in a small town called Normal. Odenkirk arrives in town as an interim sheriff. He’s a quiet guy with a dark past who is just trying to let the small things slide while settling into this “normal” small town.

The longer he is there, the more he learns about the town and the people in it, and he starts to suspect that something isn’t quite right. Then it all starts to come together when there is an attempted bank robbery… and that sets off a chain of events where all hell breaks loose!

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. If you like guns, bombs, and action, then this one may be worth the watch. Like most action movies, the plot might not be the most developed, but this one wasn’t awful. It had a decent story, and you learn a little about the supporting cast as things unfold.

But truly, the star of the show is Odenkirk.

If you’re looking for a serious, deep movie with a complicated plot, this probably isn’t it. But if you’re looking for something fun, violent, and entertaining to watch while eating dinner or walking on a treadmill, I’d give it a shot.
